What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that are sent to the user’s terminal equipment (usually to the user’s browser) by visited websites. They are stored in the browser folder of the same name while the user is browsing, to be then re-transmitted to the websites on the user’s subsequent visits to those websites

They are used to improve browsing, storing the user’s preferences already input (username, passwords, etc.), tracking the user’s preferences and tastes with the purpose of managing targeted marketing initiatives or to provide services connected to the Data Controller’s activity, such as newsletters, operational communications on the site, etc. Any limitations to their use may impact the availability of site contents during navigation. The user shall always be able to block or remove cookies from the browser cache, although doing so may compromise the enjoyment of the services offered by the web application.

Types of Cookies

Session Cookies are temporary files existing exclusively for the duration of a browsing session. When the browser is closed, session Cookies expire. They are usually employed to identify users accessing a site, remembering the user and his preferences while scrolling through the site pages and to provide the user with specific, previously collected information. The most common example is the “virtual shopping cart“ of an e-commerce site. When the user visits a catalogue page and selects some items, the session cookie stores the selections so that the elements remain in the virtual shopping cart until the user is ready to check them out. Without session Cookies, when the user proceeds to checkout the new page would not recognise the activities connected to the previously visited pages and the cart would remain empty. Persistent cookies are files that remain active also after closing the browser and help sites remember user data and settings for future visits. This result in faster and more convenient access since, for example, you don’t have to login again. Besides authentication, other website features made possible by persistent cookies include: language selection, theme selection, menu preferences, internal site bookmarks or favourites, among many others. Preferences expressed in the course of a first visit are remembered, through the use of the persistent Cookie, the next time you visit the site.

All these Cookies can be removed directly through browser settings and security settings or using specific programmes, many of which are also available for free. It is also possible to stop their creation, but in this case some of the site services might not work as designed or it might become impossible to access the site.
